Movie review: Knocked Up
Last night Alli and I met our friends Naama and Brad at the movies, to
see Knocked Up, a new comedy from the crew that put together The 40
Year Old Virgin.
I hadn't even heard about the film until Friday, when my colleague
Jasper mentioned it looked promising. A bit of googling later, we
decided it was a good relaxing thing to do, having stayed up very late
at a BBQ the night before.
It was a hilarious film, which is especially impressive given that the
basic story line is actually pretty serious, if not sad. So the entire
production crew deserves a good amount of credit for great
storytelling and writing. For big chunks of the movie, the entire
audience, including our foursome, we laughing out loud. The supporting
guy actors, playing sort of clueless ex-frat-type boys who are high
all the time, were especially funny in stereotypical ways.
It's not the smartest movie out there, but it doesn't aim to be. For
that, we've got Ocean's 13 next weekend!

There's something about grilled meat...
... that just make me a sucker for it ;)
Last weekend, after the whale-watching trip, we hosted a BBQ for a
group of friends here in town. I like grilling meats a lot, and eating
grilled meats even more. There's something about the scent of the
coals, the fire hissing, the meat sizzling, that's just appealing on a
primal level.
A fire also seems like a natural center point for a social event, a
gathering of friends and new acquaintances telling stories. I guess
that too is thousands of years old.
A couple of days ago we went to another BBQ, this time hosted by a
friend for her birthday (happy bday Gerri ;)). As usual we tested the
structural integrity of an old Boston porch by putting the grill and
as many people as could possibly fit there on the porch. The porch
survived, and we're here to tell the story...
One thing I want to do this summer is more non-meat grilling:
mushrooms, onions, octopus, squid, fish, and perhaps more exotic
alternatives.
